Third meeting
LINUX USER GROUP (LUG) BAMENDA, NWP
MINUTES OF THE 3RD MEETING AT OCOSO ON
23RD OF JUNE 2007, TIME: 1.00PM TO 5.00PM
The meeting started at 2.00pm with a word of welcome by Mr Chi David this was closely followed by self introduction by everybody. Mr Michel from Switzerland gave greetings and equally introduces the main purpose of the meeting. There was the reading of the report of the last meeting by Miss Chanceline. The comments on the last report were accompanied by some questions which were all answered by Mr. Michel, Mr Chi David and Mr Maurice. As more questions continued to flow Mr Micheal Fotang arrived who is an expert in LINUX and it was time for him to make the first presentation, he elaborated on the history and also much theory about the famous operating system Linux. Miss Chanceline presentated the Homepage of the group and equally explain in a summary how it can be created. Time was given for more questions to be asked before Mr Michel proceeded with his practical presentation. Mr Michel made demonstration on Networking peer to peer using Edubuntu and Kubuntu in different computers. He also demonstrated on wireless networking. The attendance of this meeting was made up of 35 persons some students, computer technicians and other workers/teachers. Before the closing remarks Mr Micheal Fotang said that a LUG is not out to make money but for solidarity and share knowledge he quoted an example of a LUG in Yaounde that is more concern with money issues like subscriptions etc. He said however you can actually make money in LUG but it should not be the prime goal, Mr Micheal Fotang said a LUG also carries out social issues like coffee drinking parties, excursion and visits. Mr Micheal Fotang equally promises that subsequent presentations will be well plan and made more interesting. A question was asked if an LUG is only for experts? The answers was no everybody who is interested is always trained. It was equally made clear that a LUG is not for lazy people that members should read and carryout a lot of research using the internet, books, encyclopedias etc.
Mr Chi David A. brought the closing remarks, he talked of selfish altitude to be eliminated from the group he called for openness and maximum cooperation among members and went ahead to say that if any member will be found with self centre/selfish ambitions, not attending meetings etc etc he/she will be eliminated from the group. Mr Chi also read an approved short and longterm goals for the group which were:-
1)Short term Goals: Installation of Linux on members computers, training of members and requesting from the public those who will like to use Linux for installing/training and individual publicity by members of the group.
2) Longterm Goals:- Identification of computer training centres, schools, organizations and organize seminars, workshops do presentations and distribute brochures on Linux. This will begin in Bamenda and then move to other towns in Cameroon. The aspect of bilingualism will be taken into consideration a member should be prepared to translate our documents from English to French.
Immediately after the presentation of the short and longterm goals Mr Nformi Franklin a technician in the CBC radio ask a question about the sustainability of the group i.e electricity expenses, rents etc etc. The question was fairly answered by Mr Micheal Fotang who concluded that it is usually sorted out in meeting through contributions by members. He went further to say that money in the bank does not exist in any LUG because it always brings a lot of problem especially when a member is about to leave and wants his/her own share of the money. He said a LUG handles her problems as they arises in their group meetings.
It was also emphasized that a LUG is not only to be focus on marketing Linux but will carryout research in the domain of information technology as a whole and investigate into programs that are in the computer market, analyses their advantages and disadvantage and publish the results on newletters etc etc . A LUG is a place for any computer enthusiastic person who wants to grow and get better jobs around the world.
Mr Michel came in for the last time and warned that members should not fight over material he gave the following material for the group:- Linux CD's 1) Knoppix 5, 11, 12x 2) Popy 215 CE 150 4x 3) Xubuntu 6.10 4) Kubuntu 6.10 5) Edubuntu 6.06 6) Edubuntu 7.04 /Addon 3x 7) Kubuntu 7.04 8) Edubuntu 7.04 4x 9) Edubuntu Addons 10) Laptops (02) Sony and Dell Mr Michel said the above material still belongs to him and that nobody should own any of them.
Concerning Mr Michel's departure on 30th of
June 2007 it was agreed that members should contribute whatever they had and something bought and given to Mr. Michel, Some contributions were made and pineapples bought and handed to him. The balance of money from the contribution was 9.75frs CFA. Mr Michel was give farewell and safe journey by all members present. There was some snap shot before his departure. The next meeting was agreed to hold on Saturday the 30th of June 2007 at OCOSO time 1.00pm to 5.00pm and during this meeting we will start implementing our short term goals as mentioned above.
