second meeting

-Presentation of linux by michael

MICHEAL made a presentation and he talk of open source software linux, he give the reason why many cameroonian do not know linux up to this moment. he talks about source code, about unix programs which were bought and had and still have liciences, a problem with unix was: it was very expensive and was only used in the university, so many people could not afford. at first computer were use by scienties and engineers and around 1998 many people needed computers in their homes so the father of a boy called linus towald bougth him a computer and so he just went on the internet, begin to make programs and advitised them on internet. more and more people became interested. so it was the begining of open source movement

ADVANTAGES OF LINUX linux is cheap linux is more powerful but people do not know the advantages companies need suport linux is given free of charge it has multiple desktop our focus is to make awareness to scencitised the public linux is stable the same speed is maintained it is cheap to run and you do not need to buy anti virus

michael did installation to show the people how it workes

After the presentation of michael it was discousion. here a few questions

chi why do we say linux is 98% virus free? a virus for linux has not yet been discoverd a virus on the flash can be killed with linus the soft ware is free it was for security purpose

it is easy to operate linux like other system yes it is easy to use but have the power of unix

Installation of edubuntu

after this more and less theoretical part, michel shows pratically how to install edubuntu. Why edubuntu? Because ltsp (Linux Terminal Server Project) is integrated in the distribution. LTSP is good especially for africa, because it permits to use old hardware (so cheap) and modern software. On one notebook such an installation was done, could not be finished, because of a breakdown of the electricity. other linux system was demonstrated, especially small distribution, because here in africa there is not much very powerful machine and it is good to utilize old computers.

Closing remarks -chi and we decide to make a followind meeting on the next saturday
